This fund is established to honor Dr. John Monnier for his years of teaching, mentoring, and guiding chemical engineering students at the University of South Carolina after his passing on April 6, 2024. The Department of Chemical Engineering names this fund as a tribute to his work.

His immense command of the scientific field, mentorship of the next generation and commitment to live and do what he loved every day made him a beloved figure at the Molinaroli College of Engineering and Computing (MCEC).

Dr. Monnier, a distinguished academic figure and member of the National Academy of Engineering, arrived at the MCEC in 2004 where he published more than 100 journal articles and held over 30 patents. Monnier mentored numerous undergraduate, graduate and post-doctoral students, shaping their career paths. His personal goal has been to motivate and empower talented individuals, helping them achieve their full potential.

“During one’s academic career, if one is lucky, one will have a handful of memorable mentors and role models who will shape their career, style and character. John was a shining beacon for his students, mentees and colleagues both here as well as across the globe,” says MCEC Dean Hossein Haj-Hariri.
