USC Mascot Cocky with a group of students at a First Generation Student celebration

The University of South Carolina is committed to providing a supportive and enriching academic environment for all students, regardless of their background. The First-Generation Center (FGC) has been created to address the needs of our growing population of first-generation students.

Over 20% of USC students identify as first-generation, meaning neither of their parents has earned a four-year degree. This population is growing and will likely continue to do so due to the university’s commitment to access and inclusivity. First-generation students face unique challenges in navigating the college landscape and overcoming barriers in higher education, which can impact their academic success and retention rates. The FGC serves as a hub of support and resources for all first-generation students, with initiatives to include:

  • Establishing a faculty-led living and learning community for 150 first-generation students.
  • Creating a mentoring program that pairs first-generation students with faculty, staff, and older peers.
  • Implementing targeted programming to address the needs of low-engagement groups.
  • Expanding partnerships with campus and community organizations.

The First-Generation Center at USC is a critical investment in the success of our students and the future of our university. The FGC provides much-needed support and resources to first-generation students, helping them to thrive academically, socially, and personally.
